      Why We Did the Research

Women represent 52% of the total U.S. population but only 20% of C-suite roles as of 2017, and entry-level women are 18% less likely to be promoted than their male peers. At Training Industry, we wondered what role leadership training was playing in creating or exacerbating that gender gap — and what role it could play in bridging it.

      Demographics

This report is based on data collected in two surveys in 2017. The sample included 629 men and women, of whom 551 had received leadership training within the previous 12 months.

      Why It Matters

In addition to the desire to ensure that men and women are treated equitably and justly in the workplace, multiple other studies have found that gender-balanced leadership teams boost company performance. Learning and development leaders have an important role to play in ensuring that the best leaders advance within their organization — and have the support they need to succeed.
